freshman year:

During my freshman year of college, I took two honors courses. Here's a little bit of information on them and the kind of coursework required of us.

Food: a global history

This class required a lot from its students. Each of us would lead class discussions regularly (with a powerpoint), and quizzes were given frequently. Through it, I was able to learn about the origins of many different types of foods, including corn, rice, cacao beans, spices, etc. Our final project for the class was to write a 12-15 page research paper on one of the chapters from our text. In the end, each of us would put these papers together to create a book. This was no small feat. At the end of the semester, once each paper had been turned in and graded, our two professors decided we were not anywhere near close to publication. This extremely upset a few of us who had worked hard to make sure our research papers were top notch. Three students, including myself, decided to go through and physically edit every line of the book by hand. We had five days to do this. After 200 pages and 120 hours later, we published the book. You can find it on Amazon, listed as "Food: As a Stimulus for...". To the right is my chapter of the book.

Statistical methods

Throughout this course, my classmates and I learned the science behind statistics and what it takes to conduct a statistical research experiment. After learning various different theories and equations, we were required to conduct a research experiment for our final project. This required us to create a poll and report our findings. I chose to poll people on how they receive their news: print or online? To the left is a PDF of our findings. When I turned this in, the bell chart in the center of the page had been filled out after I printed it. I do not have a copy of this chart, but the information from the poll is listed.
